The Development Assessment Program: Video Now Available

Presented by Michael Stein, Vice President Development at the Bassett Medical Center

Many nonprofit executives are confronted with the challenge of leading organizational fund raising efforts without necessarily having background or experience in this most critical area. The development assessment process provides organizations with a comprehensive analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of existing fund raising programs. The assessment process focuses on how the organization can maximize current resources and makes recommendations regarding additional resources needed to attain full fund raising potential. The development assessment is worth considering if an organization:
• Is dissatisfied with current fund raising performance.
• Wants to increase Board involvement, participation and “ownership” of the development program
• Seeks comparative benchmarks by which to evaluate fund raising effectiveness
• Is looking for a strategic development plan to complement the overall organizational strategic plan.
• Is preparing for a major capital campaign.

September 28th Program Focuses on Board Fundraising: Reluctant to Ready

Audience: Board Chair, Executive Directors/CEOs, Development Officers.

Description: This half day workshop will provide a step-by-step plan to optimize board responsiveness, effectivess, and productivity in fundraising.

•Reviewing the fundamentals

•The necessary resources
•Securing commitment
•Establishing accountability
•A look at inside as leadership

Thank you to our speakers, Paul Adamo, Tara Collins and Mike Stein!

Presenations and Video Available!

The Leatherstocking AEA program featured an engaging discussion about defining fund development and marketing in nonprofit operations, including their overlap and how to improve the partnership in these two areas. The presentation began with Paul Adamo, Vice President for College Advancement and Executive Director, College at Oneonta Foundation. In Paul's presentation (available here), he discussed his key fundraising factors and tips, as well as how marketing is involved. You can watch Paul relate his fundamentals here. In this video, Paul asks participants why people should give their nonprofit money. Lastly, Paul stresses the importance of your board in fundraising in this video.

The second portion of the program featured Tara Collins, Communications Director at Watershed Agricultural Council. In Tara's presentation (available here), she defines marketing and relates about the importance of marketing strategy. Watch here as Tara defines and stresses marketing strategy. Watch here as she elaborates on strategy and shows an example from Watershed Agricultural Council. Her presentation also addressed how to make the most of your efforts, and includes a number of linked resources.

The final portion of the program featured Mike Stein, Vice President of Development at Bassett Healthcare Network, discussing the partnership between marketing and fund development. He discussed how they often seem to compete with each other rather than build on their partnership. His suggestions for this issue included bringing both sides together through a planning and implementation, as well as ongoing communication. He also stressed recognizing the different goals fund development and marketing have, and figuring out the commonalities.

Thank You Again To Our Panelists!

Steering Committee Update

On the conference call: Debra Marcus, Michael Wesolowski, Steve Baumann, and Susan Kenny
Discussed possible plans for upcoming June 3 program meeting.
Ideas:
  • Economic impact discussion, using recent Oneida and Herkimer Nonprofit ED Group as model
  • Something uplifting/inspiring- not related to economic issues
  • Example: Survival skills in the wilderness related to being a executive director

The consensus focused on offering a program with a mixing of entertainment and professional development. Susan is investigating the possibility of having PACT Training play this role at the next program. A suggestion has been made to move the date back to June 17th, and the Soccer Hall of Fame is willing to host the meeting.

Brief discussion about the budget for Leatherstocking AEA. The group doesn't have a formal operating budget, and is supported by NYCON. Expenses (food, meeting space, etc) are mostly covered by a small fee paid by each attending director.

An update on the program status will available shortly.

More companies using furloughs

MSNBC's Your Career section featured an article by Eve Tahmincioglu discussing how many companies, universities and governments across the country are forcing their workers to take unpaid time off. This was a topic amongst the Leatherstocking AEA group recently. The article also relates the wage and hour laws that complicate the issue. Any suggestions or additional information on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Post it here or send us an e-mail.

Resource Sharing Roundtable

At the suggestion of Julie Dostal, Executive Director of the LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions, a roundtable discussion will be scheduled in December for nonprofits to discuss ways to respond to budget cuts and decreasing revenues. The following survey will help gather ideas for this discussion on sharing resources, cutting costs, and sustaining operations. Feel free to share your feedback and input on this idea.

November 12th Program: Marketing Tips and Tools Wrap Up

Our final meeting for 2008 was an engaging program featuring the Baseball Hall of Fame's Director of Communications, Craig Muder. With a decade long career in the newspaper industry and now employed by a nonprofit organization he used to cover, Craig provided invaluable insight into the media world and how nonprofits can make sense of its sometimes frustrating systems. He imparted three main points.
  • First, relationship building is the key. He discussed how you need to make the media feel like they are a part of what you are building.
  • Second, the media is an imperfect system. You cannot expect your message to be delivered as is, so self-publishing should be a focus. By using your nonprofit's website, you can control and reinforce your message.
  • Lastly, nonprofits need to understand that the media is not plotting at their desks to screw up your message. They are trying to produce a product as quickly as possible in a highly competitive environment.

Craig also offered insight into the newspaper world. He outlined how much planning goes into assembling a newspaper, especially in terms of coverage. Like any organization, the media have limited time and resources. He suggested that nonprofits should notify the media about events and issues two weeks in advance and follow up with a reminder phone call.

The 15 participants who attended the meeting continued the discussion with a number of questions. One such question was asked about how nonprofits can build relationships with the media. Craig's advice was to be honest. He also suggested identifying people in the media who seem to be committed to their jobs. There is significant turnover in media, especially among reporters.

The program ended with a discussion about negative or unwanted press coverage and the challenges in dealing with it. Craig's advice was that you have to remember the idea a reporter is pursuing for a story usually is coming from the top. The best way to respond is to not be defensive and work to give the reporter your angle on the issue. Help the reporter do their job and influence them with your perspective. Usually, you will have some success in getting your point across.

Do you have your own tips for success with the media, especially in dealing with negativity? Feel free to share them here.

Next Program: Media Tips and Tools

The Steering Committee had a recent conference call to discuss the next program set for Wed, November 12th. Program topic ideas had been put forward by Group participants, such as a program focusing on strategic planning and SWOT analysis to a working session to identify nonprofit needs and divide Group participants by these needs to help formulate solutions. But the conversation came back to the success of the previous media panel discussion, and the need for a follow up session.

The media panel offered participants a big picture conversation from regional media businesses. The information was great, but the Steering Committee found themselves asking how do we take the next steps? How do we respond to the media panel's suggestions? What are the tips and tools to working with the media and getting your message out? Maybe you have your own questions, which we would love to hear. The Committee is planning the Nov 12th program to focus on the how to of working with the media, the tips and tools, and participant sharing of examples of success. More details will follow soon.
