Otsego County JobZone Video Links

Over the past year or so, the Otsego County Economic Development Office, in conjunction with the Milford CORE institute and VeccVideography have put together “Job Zone Videos”.  These videos are aimed at educating students (mainly addressing kids, 8th through 12th grade), parents and educators about the many diverse and growing companies in Otsego County.  You will see from the list that Delaware County is also participating in this initiative.

CORE will be working on creating more videos over time, and “bundling” industry videos to show the diversity within each sector.  If you have any suggestions, please feel free to let us know.

New ED at Catskill Center for Conservation and Development

Alan White of Halcott Center became executive director of The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development on Monday.

Board President H. Claude Shostal said White was selected following an extensive search involving numerous qualified candidates.

White was formerly the Catskill Mountain director for The Nature Conservancy, and was also employed by Sullivan County Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Watershed Agricultural Council. He is a Halcott Town Board member and is on the Catskill Landowner Association board of directors.

The Catskill Center is located in Arkville and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The mission of the Catskill Center is to support appropriate economic and cultural development while preserving open space and protecting natural resource in the Catskill region, according to a media release.

DELAWARE COUNTY NY CONNECTS: CHOICES FOR LONG TERM CARE

To College Professors & Students,

This letter is an introduction to a project sponsored by the Delaware County NY Connects Advisory Board. The Board has been meeting over the last few years to identify gaps in service in Delaware County. One of the gaps identified was services in regards to geriatric mental health. That is why we will be hosting a series of trainings around this subject starting with the first training Tuesday, March 2nd at SUNY Delhi, MacDonald Hall. The speakers will be Dr. Michael Friedman from the Geriatric Mental Health Association and he will do a presentation on Geriatric mental Health 101. We will also have Philip McCallion from the School of Social Welfare at the University at Albany and he will be do a presentation on the Coming of the Elder Boom and the impact it will have on the healthcare system. We welcome your attendance to these events. A brochure is included with this letter. Feel free to make copies. Seating is limited to the first 120 registrants.

This presentation will review the changing profiles of the Nation’s & New York’s aging population and the trends likely to influence aging services in the decades ahead. Differing expectations, experiences with service agencies, desire for community and self-managed care and readiness to advocate among these new or growing populations for aging services will be discussed, as will strategies for agencies and practitioners to successfully meet the challenge.

Michael B. Friedman, LMSW

This presentation will provide an overview of the mental health needs of older adults, and will particularly focus on the coming mental health needs of the elder boom generation. Information about common late life mental disorders and their treatment will be provided. Participants will also learn about the importance of creating effective programmatic options for meeting the mental health needs of older adults and will learn how they can become involved in creating sound mental health polices for elders.


Philip McCallion, PhD. ACSW is a professor in the School of Social Welfare at the University at Albany, a Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar and Mentor and is Director of the Institute for Social Services Research and Development. Within the newly formed institute, Dr. McCallion directs the Center for Excellence in Aging Services and the NIDA – funded Child Welfare, Drug Abuse and Intergenerational Risk Research Center.

Lisa A. Ferretti, LMSW is the Director of Operations for the Center of Excellence in Aging Services at the University at Albany School of Social Welfare. Ms. Ferretti develops and conducts trainings for the New York State Office for the Aging and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services as well as local offices for the aging and NY Connects.

Michael B. Friedman is the founder and Chairperson of the Geriatric Mental Health Alliance of New York and Director of The Center for Policy, Advocacy, and Education of The Mental Health Association of New York City. In addition, he teaches courses on health policy and social advocacy at Columbia University School of Social Work as well as a course on mental health policy at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.


Future Programming

The Delaware County NY Connects Advisory Council identified the need for educating long term care professionals on the needs of the aging population and mental illness. We will have four trainings with both a morning and an afternoon session to be held in Delaware County. These trainings are being partially funded by the Delaware County Rural Health Alliance.

Cullman Child Development Center Executive Director Job

The Cullman Child Development Center (CCDC), located in Sidney, NY, is seeking a new Executive Director. The CCDC is seeking an individual with excellent communication and leadership skills to manage all aspects of the Center. This individual must have the ability to develop community partnerships adn marketing strategies in addition to overseeing the educational, financial and administrative programs for the CCDC. A Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education and evidence of related management and educational experience are required.

Area United Ways report mixed results

The Daily Star reported that with several weeks to go for area United Way campaigns, those involved are reporting mixed results.

At the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties, Executive Director Terry Capuano said in a recent media release that she was optimistic the campaign would reach its goal of $345,000. Roughly the same amount was raised last year, when the campaign was about $23,000 short of its target.

Contributions from donors were running the same or ahead of last year, she said in the release. She could not be reached for comment Thursday to see how much has been collected so far.

"In this economy, we are so thankful for our faithful donors," Capuano said in the release. Read more here about other area United Way results.

Catskill Center marks its 40th

The Daily Star reported that The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development will mark its founding 40 years ago with a celebration on Saturday, July 18, at the Delaware & Ulster Railroad Park in Arkville.

According to a media release, in recognition of its four decades of service in the Catskill Mountain Region, the Catskill Center will be bestowing its Alf Evers Award for Excellence on four Catskills businesses that contribute to the local economy, serve as sustainable business models and provide cultural opportunities to local residents and visitors: Apple Pond Farm and Renewable Energy Center, The Belleayre Conservatory, Merrick Tackle and Catskill Craftsman.

Headlining the festival is Grammy-nominated, kid-friendly Trout Fishing in America, followed by traditional hometown mountain music from The Tremperskill Boys. Read more here about the Catskill Center.

Mini-grants available to nonprofits

The Daily Star reported that the New York Council of Nonprofits and the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties is accepting applications for its Delaware County Mini-Grant Program.

The annual program is designed to improve the governance and management operations of qualifying 501(c)(3) nonprofits that are located in or provide substantial services to Delaware County.

Grants will be awarded competitively on a first-come, first-served basis to qualifying nonprofits with approved project activities. Grant criteria and application are available by request. The earlier a qualified application, is submitted the more likely grant funds will be available, officials said.

NYCON, formerly CCSNYS, is a governance, management and support services organization serving charities in the state. NYCON has a membership of more than 1,600 charities of all types and has offices in Albany, New York City, Buffalo, Poughkeepsie and Oneonta.
United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties serves 12 programs in nine health and human service organizations, as well as providing support for the Delaware County Mini-Grant Program.

Naturalist and essayist John Burroughs enjoyed beauty, solitude at his Catskills retreat, Woodchuck Lodge

The Schnectady Daily Gazette featured a story about John Burroughs and his home, Woodchuck Lodge, in Roxbury, which is a nonprofit history organization. As the article relates, John Burroughs enjoyed communing with nature as well as anyone, and he wrote about it better than most.

A naturalist and essayist whose writing helped spark the American conservation movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Burroughs enjoyed the popularity of a rock star for more than three decades up until his death in 1921 just a few days shy of his 84th birthday.
He died on a train returning home to Woodchuck Lodge in his beloved Catskills following a cross-country trip. While he loved the Rocky Mountains and toured the West with the likes of fellow naturalist John Muir and U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt, Burroughs was synonymous with the Catskills.


Woodchuck Lodge, his home for the last 10 years of his life, and his burial site, both about two miles off Route 30 in the town of Roxbury, are great places to visit for those interested in Burroughs and for anyone who loves to experience the Catskill Mountains.

“He was a self-taught scientist and a very accessible writer,” said Diane Galusha, president of the board of trustees of Woodchuck Lodge Inc., the nonprofit group that maintains Burroughs’ residence. “That made him a pretty popular guy, and to get away from people and find some solitude he moved to this beautiful spot in 1910.”

Woodchuck Lodge, which is a few miles inside Delaware County from Schoharie County, is open to the public only on the first Saturday and Sunday of every month, beginning in May and running through October. Docents are available to give visitors a tour of the wooden house on those days, but if you can’t make it that first weekend of the month, you’re welcome to drive about 100 yards farther up Burroughs Memorial Road and stop at Burroughs Memorial Field. A state-run historic site, Burroughs Memorial Field is where Burroughs is buried next to the big rock he used to play around when he was a child. Read more about Burroughs here.
