RECAP: Online Volunteer Management Tools and Resources

Twelve participants attended the recent Leatherstocking AEA program meeting, but if you weren't able to attend, don't worry. You will find the presentation from NYCON's regional manager, Andrew Marietta, below. The program offered an overview of possible online tools and resources for nonprofits to use to manage and work with their volunteers. Program topic areas included management, communication, online tools for all areas of volunteer management and defining virtual volunteers. The presentation also offers some suggested next steps for nonprofits looking at doing more with volunteers and hoping to use more online tools.

In order to facilitate more sharing amongst the participants, please post your comments on your nonprofit's volunteer program and what online tools you may be using or are hoping to use. You can also e-mail your input to amarietta@nycon.org.

Volunteers have been making the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States possible since its founding in 1981.

Volunteer doctors make themselves available 24-hours a day to staff the most important service MHAUS provides, the MH Hotline.

Volunteers make up the MHAUS Board of Directors and the MHAUS Professional Advisory Council that generates and approves our medical content.

Volunteers staff the MHAUS Patient Liaison Committee to help people new to MH navigate their way to testing and specific information.

A new situation fans chatting with each other on the MHAUS Facebook Fan Page asking what can they do to build awareness in their community; which presented quite a challenge to an organization that has been pushing information out from one source for some thirty years. In response Facebook friends are being asked to become MH Ambassadors to build awareness about Malignant Hyperthermia in the community where they live by talking with people about MH and sharing information; this new program due to launch later this month.

Since preparation is the best way to manage MH emergencies, the primary assignment an MH Ambassador has is to make sure medical professionals know about educational and training materials available to them to keep their patients and facilities safer from MH. However an Ambassador may also:

* Provide information and navigation to people who are not familiar with MH.
* Raise funds for the 24-hour MHAUS MH Hotline, and research done by the North American MH Registry of MHAUS, educational outreach, and scholarship awards.
* Plan social gatherings, sporting events, and cultural activities that call attention to MH.
* Connect with other like-minded people interested in this fascinating syndrome.
* Have fun and be creative!

How are volunteers helping in your organization?
