Shine the Light on Domestic Violence

Did you know that one in four
women will experience domestic
violencein their lifetime and
 that women between the ages
of 20 to 24 experience the
greatest risk of becoming victims?
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
is key in raising awareness of this

crime as a social issue and educating
women on resources available so they
can come forward and get help.

October is all about making the community aware of domestic
violence and the seriousness of this issue. Here are a few events that
VIP has planned for the month:

Shine The Light:  Main Street in Oneonta will be getting a whole
new look, adorned with purple lights and ribbons to bring awareness
of domestic violence. Businesses will be asked to adorn their doors
and windows with a purple ribbon and information about the program
and services. Ribbons will be given to select businesses to provide to
their customers that choose to take them.

Shine the Light on Domestic Violence was initiated by the Governor’s
Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and is now a
statewide public awareness campaign. The campaign sparks
discussion about this devastating problem that threatens the safety
 of too many New Yorkers.

Lawn Signs:  VIP is providing “Stop the Violence” signs for
any business or homeowner to display on their lawn.

Wear Purple Day:  Shirts, ties, dresses, nail polish… it doesn’t matter
what you wear, just wear purple proudly on October 16th to remember
those whose lives are affected by Domestic Violence, celebrate
survivors, remember the victims and to promote awareness!

“In Her Shoes” Simulation Event: Experience the ups and downs
of a woman living with domestic violence. October 24th from 6-9pm
@ OFO. Register by October 14th. Space is limited.

OFO Launches New Website

Through a grant from the Verizon Foundation, the Violence Intervention Program has launched a new website dedicated to teens.  Using the tumblr platform, the program created a safe place for teens to get information about healthy and unhealthy relationships and ask anonymous questions about dating and relationships.  Through the foundation funds, VIP also developed teen specific safety cards and bookmarks focused on the “do’s
and don’ts” of Facebook and texting.
To check out the website:  Click the
“Just for Teens” button on the VIP
program page (www.ofoinc.org/vip
