Free Career Service Workshops Open to the Public Offered at Morrisville State College Norwich Campus


MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Need help creating a resume, cover letter or preparing for an interview? Morrisville State College is offering free career workshops at its Norwich campus.



The hour-long workshops, offered through the college’s Career Services Office, will all be held in the community room of Roger Follett Hall.



Individual appointments will also be available after each session on a first-come, first-served basis.



The following workshops are being held from 9 to 10 a.m.

May 16 How to Create a Resume

May 23 Writing an Effective Cover Letter

June 1 Preparing for a Successful Interview

Arts Impacts

A Chenango County organization has been tapped by a national agency for nonprofit research. The Chenango County Council of the Arts is now partnering with Americans for the Arts.

Every few years, the national agency does a study on arts and economic prosperity and the connection between the two.

It will examine the spending habits of people who come to cultural events and how they spend their money in the region.

"Also, tracking the spending habits of those cultural organizations as well," said Victoria Calvert-Kappel, Chenango County Council of the Arts. "We think about people coming and spending money on dinner or parking or whatever, but you also have to think about how every cultural organization is a business."

"It's going to be great for municipalities to be able to say, you know, this is a wonderful way to gauge economic impact maybe we never realized before, the big impact of the arts on our local economy, and let's foster that a little more," Calvert-Kappel said.

The study will be conducted over a twelve-month period. The Chenango County Council is one of two hundred groups across the country which will participate in the study.

UCCCA grants shift to Chenango Group

From the Daily Star: Local artists and organizations seeking state 2011 Decentralization Grant funding in Otsego County should see little difference with the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts no longer handling the program, two people involved with the situation said.

The Chenango County Council of the Arts announced last week that it would be administering $25,000 in funding for Otsego County provided by the New York State Council on the Arts. The group also serves Broome and Chenango counties, and the funding is available to all non-profit organizations, including municipalities and artists sponsored by a non-profit organization in the three counties, according to a media release from CCCA.

Changes in staffing at UCCCA caused the change in administration, an official there said. A spokesman at NYSCA was not able to provide information on the change Friday.

Norwich High School Youth Philanthropy Council seeks proposals for 2010 funding

The Evening Sun reported that the Norwich High School Youth Philanthropy Council is a foundation at Norwich High School comprised of 10 upperclassmen. During the fall semester, students completed a non-credit course taught by community leaders in the fields of non-profit organizations, foundations and grant making. The Council, now in its second year, was developed and supported through the collaborative efforts of the Upstate Institute at Colgate University, Chenango United Way, The Community Foundation for South Central New York, and Norwich High School. In 2010, the YPC will distribute a total of $10,000 to not-for-profit agencies in Chenango County. The money being granted by the Youth Philanthropy Council was donated by Chenango United Way, The Community Foundation for South Central New York, and NBT Bank.

The Youth Philanthropy Council is now seeing proposals from non-profit organizations looking to break the cycle of poverty in Chenango County by providing education to low income families. The hope for funding is to prepare families to sustain themselves in the future rather than provide immediate relief?in essence, to help families help themselves. Proposals should reflect a careful rationale for the project. Grant applications will be accepted for requests up to $5,000, but full funding may not be available. Programs that received YPC funding in 2009 are not eligible to apply for funds in 2010.

Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network to hold forums

The Daily Star reported that Mothers & Babies Perinatal Network announced the schedule of annual community forums to be held throughout Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga, and Tompkins counties.

These annual forums provide an opportunity for local leaders and policymakers, health and human-services providers and consumers to raise issues, make suggestions for programs or services and to comment on and learn more about the work of the Perinatal Network, presenters said.

Locally, a forum will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at FoxCare Center in Oneonta, and from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich. The forums will feature presentations on the network's work from the past year.
Those who attend may share information about local or personal-service needs, concerns or other issues.
